An Assistant Director, Federal Ministry of Education, Ms Obiageli Ezeilo, has called on schools to make library resources align with school curriculum for easy learning for students.
Ezeilo made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), after being honoured with a Gratitude Award from the Federal Government Boys’ college, Abuja Alumni Association.
According to her, the call to make library resources relevant to the school curriculum is imperative because it will help students to get hands-on study materials for academic success.
She explained that aligning library resources with the school’s curriculum, the classification would ensure that library directly supported what students learn in their classes and many more.
“This is the goal that drove the renovation of the school library I carried out.
“This is to establish an environment that fosters community engagement, creativity, and knowledge sharing of a wide range of subjects and skills that will broaden the knowledge of students.
“Today the library has gone beyond books and shelves. Digital innovations have changed a lot of things,’’ she said.
Ezeilo said that the potential in the library space could create something extraordinary with the right resources and community support.
“I designed a time classification of subjects for the Junior Secondary Education section in line with the educational curriculum of Nigeria.
“This included a broad range of topics to increase students’ knowledge and proficiency. This classification will help students concentrate on particular study areas, “she said
She added that students would readily locate pertinent resources and provide a more seamless educational experience.
The education expert said that the classification would also facilitate the identification of gaps and easy access to learning resources.
Ezeilo said that her innovation in the library earned her a Letter of commendation from the Ministry of Education and a Gratitude Award from the school alumni association.
This, she said was for renovating and creating a friendly space in the sitting section of the School E-library, thereby transforming the library into a modern and vibrant learning and inspirational hub.
“I volunteered to help transform the school library, one of the first tasks we handled was organising the library.
“The principal had earlier solicited for books to equip the library from Federal Ministry of Education and they obliged with over 30,000 curriculum related books.
“We renovated the library under the project I initiated called “He Bay Friendly space’’, so the library can be very friendly for students to make use of,’’ she said.
Ezeilo said that it was the innovation that earned her an award in recognition and as a testament of her commitment and achievement. (NAN)
