The Executive Director (ED), Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR)Prof. Mohammed Ishiaku has recommended later parts of May, and early June as suitable periods for the planting of cereal and legume crops respectively in the Savanna area of Nigeria.

Prof. Mohammad Ishiyaku stated this while interacting with newsmen on weather prediction for 2023 in Zaria Wednesday.

He advised that farmers should start planting cereal crops around the end of May, while it should be followed by groundnuts and soybean (legume) in early June around southern Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara and towards FCT, Abuja.

IAR boss stressed that cowpea planting should be planted in the early part of July in places like Kano, Jigawa and northern part of Bauchi States.

Prof. Ishiyaku described the Nigerian Meterological Agency ( NIMET) predictions on normal rainfall as a good news to farming system, pointed that the rainy season would end at the time we are already known or used to.
