The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, said that a complex world shaped by conflict, growing polarization, and the breakdown of institutions, demand international cooperation.
The Minister, said this while addressing global audience at Woodrow Wilson International Centre for Scholars, in United States of America.
Speaking on a topic, “The Evolving Partnership between Nigeria and the US in an Ever-Changing Global Arena,” Amb. Tuggar said that Nigeria, as a regional leader with a history of overcoming differences, can play a role as a non-aligned conciliator.
The Minister, expressed gratitude to the Woodrow Wilson International Centre for Scholars for inviting him to speak on the important topic.
He said that insecurity in Nigeria, is inextricably linked to instability in the sub-region, which can have a severe impact on global stability.
He however, tasked the United States and the rest of the world not to wait until these problems reach their doorsteps.
He averred that Nigeria and the rest of Africa, seek partnerships, and not handouts, to counter terrorism, insecurity, and disinformation.
Nigeria, the Minister said, is on the frontline of many global challenges, including climate change, migration, and violent extremism.
He said: “As a regional leader, we need the weapons, equipment, technical support, and capacity building to address these challenges. But we are seeking partnerships, not handouts. Partnerships that can help keep our country and the wider region safe and stable, laying the foundation for sustainable growth. The world is in flux, but the relationship between Nigeria and the United States can transcend the challenges of today. Let us embrace the possibilities of tomorrow by working together to promote democracy, inclusive development, and strengthen links with our diaspora”.
He recalled that Nigeria and the United States have a longstanding and robust relationship dating back to our independence in 1960.
This relationship, Amb. Tuggar said, has continued to grow stronger, as illustrated by the significant bilateral trade and cooperation on a wide range of issues.
According to him, “Just yesterday, I met with the US Deputy Secretary of State to further strengthen our partnership on economic growth, security, technology, energy, food security, and multilateral reform. We find ourselves at a crucial juncture marked by unprecedented global challenges and transformative opportunities. Our shared values and ambitions – democracy, stability, and a commitment to addressing the needs of our people – provide a strong foundation for us to build on in addressing these challenges”.
He concluded that the global community can chart a new path forward for peace, stability, and prosperity.
