The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has put on hold its planned nationwide strike slated for Sept. 15.
The NANS Senate President, Adewumi Okunomo disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday.
Okunomo said this was put on hold to enable the association deliberate in its Congress to determine the way forward.

He said the proposed strike was aimed at shutting down major cities across Nigeria as the decision was unanimously made by all NANS Senators, driven by the current state of the nation and the recent hike in PMS prices.
“As leaders of Nigerian students, we are duty-bound to defend the interests of our constituents and the Nigerian people at all times.
“Let me reiterate that NANS is not an appendage of the government but an independent organisation committed to advocating for the welfare of the people.
“We have joined voices with other groups in the country to demand a better life for Nigerians,” he said.
Okunomo added that following the circular released by the National Secretariat of NANS from the President, Comrade Pedro Obi, calling for a non-elective Congress, he said the association had taken initiative on it.
“A letter to this effect has been sent to the Senate arm of NANS. We now await the Congress’s decisions, as we engage the government to reverse these inhumane policies.
“Our agitations remain unchanged, and we urge all Nigerian students to await the outcome of the Congress before determining our next line of action.
” As enshrined in our constitution, the Congress’s decisions supersedes all other organs’ decisions. Article 7, Subsection 3 of the NANS Charter of Demand (Constitution)clearly states:
“The Congress shall be the highest decision-making body of the Association, and its decisions shall be binding on all members and organs of the Association.”
He however said in light of this, the association shall mobilise all Senators to present its demands at the Congress.
