In a bid to alleviate the suffering of vulnerable households during the Ramadan period, Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, has flagged off the distribution of 35,000 bags of rice and condiments tagged Ramadan Food Basket.

The distribution, which targets 30,000 vulnerable households, is in addition to the annual Ramadan feeding centers across the state. Governor Buni disclosed that the government is spending N297 million to provide food to the less privileged at the Ramadan feeding centers, which have been increased from 85 to 102 this year.

Other beneficiaries of the food basket include internally displaced persons (IDPs), teachers, resident doctors, flood victims, farmers affected by poor harvests, and other disadvantaged persons.

Governor Buni emphasized that the state government’s commitment to the welfare of its people goes beyond seasonal interventions. He highlighted the government’s efforts in providing emergency relief, including food and non-food items, to victims of the 2024 floods.

The Governor also announced the construction of the Erosion, Flood and Water Harvesting project in Damaturu and Buni Yadi towns to curb the menace of floods and harvest water for irrigation.

In November 2024, the government launched two major initiatives to restore livelihoods and foster sustainable development across Yobe State, providing N1.4 billion support to 25,500 flood victims and vulnerable groups, and N1 billion empowerment to 10,000 small business owners.

Governor Buni urged the public to complement the government’s efforts in supporting the most vulnerable members of society, emphasizing the importance of kindness, generosity, and solidarity. He cautioned those responsible for the distribution to ensure that the interventions reach the intended beneficiaries efficiently and transparently.
