FRSC Steers Nigeria Towards Safer Roads: Supports UN’s Decade of Action for Road Safety

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030.

Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Assistant Corps Marshal,Corps Public Education Officer, in a statement, said the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, gave the reaffirmation during a seminar held on March 24, 2025, at its National Headquarters in Abuja.

The Corps Marshal emphasized Nigeria’s leadership role in global road safety campaigns and reiterated FRSC’s dedication to achieving the UN’s goals of halving road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030.

The seminar reviewed the Marrakech Declaration on road safety, with Mohammed highlighting FRSC’s proactive measures since the first UN Decade of Action (2011–2020).

He commended stakeholders and NGOs, particularly Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem of Kwapda’as Road Safety Demand (KRSD), for their contributions to road safety advocacy.

In her remarks, Hon Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem of KRSD, who is also the President of the Court of Appeal praised the FRSC for its consistency in promoting the ideals of safer road environment. She charged all the nongovernmental organizations committed to the cause of road safety to do more in their advocacy programs in promoting road safety in the country. Justice Monica Dongban -Mensem further expressed the willingness of her NGO to pursue the goals of road safety with greater aggression.

As part of the program at the seminar, some experts engaged in discussion aimed at reviewing the Marrakech declaration with recommendations on the way forward. Also at the seminar, the two awards won by Nigeria for its commitment to issues of road safety were publicly presented.

The seminar also featured expert discussions on the Marrakech Declaration and showcased two awards won by Nigeria for its road safety initiatives.

Participants included FRSC officials, NGOs, and other stakeholders.
