The Paramount Ruler of the Igbo people (Ndigbo) in Angwadodo Community, Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), HRH Chidi Nwogwugwu, has called on the legislative, executive, and judicial arms of government to promote and support cultural festivals like the New Yam Festival. He emphasized the need for these events to be backed by law to preserve the nation’s rich cultural heritage.

Speaking during the 2025 New Yam Festival, organized by Ohaneze Ndigbo in his domain, Eze Ndigbo highlighted the significance of the festival in rekindling the Igbo people’s rich cultures and traditions. “We use this festival to let our people know how to keep certain customs, such as breaking cola nuts, and to promote our traditional culture and values,” he said.

The monarch expressed concern that many people have lost touch with their cultural roots, including the Igbo language, which is dominantly spoken in during the festival. He stressed that preserving cultural identity requires support and encouragement from government officials.

Eze Ndigbo commended the success of the festival, attributing it to the love, peace, and unity in the community. He noted that the Igbo Community is known for helping one another, particularly during times of trouble or crisis.

The Eze Ndigbo’s call to action emphasizes the importance of cultural festivals in promoting national identity and preserving traditional values. By supporting these events, the government can play a vital role in ensuring the continuation of Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
