NLA hails First Lady for mobilising N20.7bn toward national library completion

The Nigerian Library Association (NLA) has commended the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, for her initiative in raising N20.7 billion to support the completion of the National Library headquarters in Abuja.

In a statement signed by its President, Dr Lawal Umar, and Secretary, Dr Amogu Kalu, on Saturday, the association described the First Lady’s gesture as a rare act of patriotism and visionary leadership.

The association said that Tinubu used the occasion of her 65th birthday to call on well-wishers and donors to contribute to the National Library Project Fund rather than present her personal gifts.

It added that the fundraising account would remain open until December 2025 to attract further support.

According to the association, the initiative has not only rekindled hope for the completion of the long-delayed project but also underscored the importance of libraries to education, literacy, and national development.

“For decades, the unfinished National Library has been a source of disappointment. Your Excellency’s intervention has injected fresh momentum and spotlighted the value of a modern repository of knowledge to the country’s intellectual growth,” the NLA said.

The body further pledged to work with the Office of the First Lady to ensure that the completed facility is adequately equipped and functional.

It also urged the Federal Government and the National Assembly to make sustained annual budgetary provisions to guarantee effective operation of the library after its completion.

“The funds raised through this noble initiative represent more than financial contributions; they reflect the collective goodwill and belief of the Nigerian people in the potential of a national library,” the statement added.

The NLA said Mrs Tinubu’s name has been “written in gold” for her uncommon contributions to education and literacy in the country. (NAN)
