Barrister Alex Edim, Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) branches in Nyanya and Karu, Federal Capital Territory, has staunchly defended NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN) against what he called blackmail and verbal assaults by some lawyers.

Speaking at a press conference in his Abuja office, Edim condemned attacks led by Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja (SAN), insisting no amount of “hired scripting” can tarnish Osigwe’s hard-earned reputation as a role model for the association.

“Jaja and others have consistently targeted Osigwe’s person and integrity,” Edim said. “They must stop these verbal attacks.”

Edim stressed that the NBA transcends any individual, urging members to prioritize issue-based campaigns ahead of upcoming elections rather than distractions that risk discrediting the profession. “Be careful not to step on toes while supporting candidates,” he advised.

He questioned Jaja’s involvement, noting that as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Jaja is no longer an NBA member and should “let the association breathe.” Edim affirmed that all aspirants deserve respect, with the eventual winner earning full support for a progressive Bar.

The rift over Osigwe’s leadership—marked by criticism of his style and calls for resignation—persists, but Edim’s intervention highlights robust backing for the incumbent.

With the NBA’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s legal sphere and keenly contested elections on the horizon, this defense underscores deepening factional lines.
