*It’s attempt to use Church to gain cheap publicity – Observers
By Toby Chuks
The Catholic Diocese of Enugu has strongly distanced itself from a controversial political rally organized to endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a swift and decisive reaction, the church leadership warned organizers against dragging the sacred institution into partisan politics, maintaining that the Catholic Church remains a father to all political entities.
Report has it that APC has already concluded plans to use Church facility but the Church rejected the move. In a disclaimer issued by the Diocese, the Church clarified that a media announcement circulating about a “Historic Endorsement Rally and Adoption Ceremony,” scheduled for Friday, July 3, 2026, at Jubilee Hall, Holy Ghost Cathedral, Enugu, does not have its approval.
The disclaimer was signed by Rev. Fr. Anthony Aneke, Director of Communications, Catholic Diocese of Enugu. According to the Diocese, Jubilee Hall and all other ecclesiastical facilities under its jurisdiction are not available for partisan political rallies, endorsements, or similar political activities.
The statement emphasized that the planned event does not reflect the policy or position of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu and, as a result, will not hold at Jubilee Hall, Holy Ghost Cathedral. The Diocese also expressed regret over any misunderstanding the announcement may have caused.
Meanwhile political observers have hailed the decision of the Church accusing APC of attempt to use the Church to gain cheap solidarity and popularity at a time when people of the State are facing severe economic hardship.
