President Bola Tinubu has met with executive members of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa Abuja.
The meeting which held inside the President’s office on Wednesday, came few hours after both unions staged a peaceful protest in Abuja, to press home grievances over the recent subsidy removal policy of the federal government.
It was not clear what transpired at the private meeting but Joe Ajaero, President of NLC, said the President has expressed his position and made some commitment which we have taken side by side with what the National Assembly said and we are taking it back to our office with colleagues review it and release a document on our next line of action.
Asked if the commitment made by the President was different from the national broadcast few days ago, Ajaero responded saying they went deeper than that.
“The broadcast are broader issues but we have gone into one or two things that need immediate intervention”.
Also asked if the protest will be called off since they have met with the President, again he responded,” no one person can call off the protest that is why I told you we need to go to the office to meet with our colleagues to discuss the broader issues and by tomorrow the NLC will have its National Executive Council meeting to look at the broader picture and come up with a position”.
Recall that Labour had criticised the national broadcast of the President on Monday evening, claiming it failed to address steps to resuscitate the ailing refineries.
On its part, the TUC led by Festus Osifo had claimed the palliatives put on the table by the Federal Government was not sufficient enough to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal policy.
