The Anambra North Towns Association, representing the Omambala people, recently marked the New Yam Festival (Iwa Ji) in Abuja. The occasion brought together members of the community to celebrate their rich culture, tradition, and economic prowess in yam production.
In his address, the Chairman of the occasion, His Majesty, Douglas Onochie Onuora (Eze Umuikolobia), highlighted the significance of yam production in the Omambala community. He noted that the Omambala people are the greatest producers of yams within and outside the South East region, contributing significantly to the economy of Anambra State, the South East, and Nigeria.
The Chairman emphasized the importance of the New Yam Festival in promoting the rich culture of the Igbo race. He commended the organizers for their efforts in bringing the community together to celebrate their heritage.
He also highlighted the economic benefits of yam production, noting that it contributes significantly to the economy of Anambra State and Nigeria. He urged Governor Chukwuma Soludo to do more to support yam farmers, which would enable them to double their efforts in producing yams and other farm produce.
The Chairman of the Association, Dr. (Engr) Okechukwu Emmanuel Chikelue (Orimili Aguilera), emphasized the unity and solidarity among the members of the Anambra North Towns Association. He noted that the association’s motto, “Anyi Bu Ofu” (We Are One), reflects their commitment to working together in unison.
The Chairman encouraged people to go into farming, highlighting its potential for economic growth and development. He also appealed for support from government and private individuals to provide technical know-how, inputs, and other resources to yam farmers.
Chief (Mrs) Suzan Okolo, the Mother of the Day, hailed the organizers for a well-planned cultural festival and the members for their massive turnout. She called for the continuation of the event, saying it would contribute to promoting unity and rich culture among the people.
