Abuja based Chidubem Amassiani and Etoro Bassey from Akwa Ibom state, were outstanding at the weekend following their excellent performance at the Grand finale of the 2023 Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Junior Tennis Championship held at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Tafawa Balewa Square(TBS) Lagos.
Playing in the boys U-12 category at the Lord Rumen’s centre court, Chidubem defeated Wisdom Effiong from Akwa Ibom state 9-3 to emerge victorious while Etoro claimed victory over Eunice Irolumun from Benue state in the Girls U-16 class by beating her 9-5.
Chidubem and Etoro also emerged as the tournament most improved players in the boys and girls categories respectively.
Both players were handed their merited awards/trophies by the CBN Ag Director, Corporate Communications department, Dr. Isa Abdulmumuni who represented the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele at the Grand finale.
In other categories, Aina Henry (Ondo state) beat Joseph Ogunyemi ( Lagos) 9-0 to win the boys U-16 event while the boys U-14 title went to David Edwards(Lagos), younger brother of the sensational Marylove Edwards, the current and CBN Senior Tennis Open women’s Champion who stopped Seyi Ogunsakin(Ekiti state) 9-3. Ogunsakin was a victim of many unforced errors n the encounter
Aina Goodnesws (Ekiti) defeated her Ekiti state counterpart, Gloria Samuel 9-4 to win the girls U-14 trophy while Mutiu Atitola smiled home with the girls U-12 trophy following her 9-6 victory over Roseline Nana in an all Lagos affair.
