In a bold move to combat the pervasive issue of gender-based violence in Nigeria, the Daurama Foundation, a non-governmental organization dedicated to improving health outcomes and advocating for the rights of women and girls, has unveiled a short film titled Voices Within.
The film, described as a gripping and emotional narrative, aims to raise awareness about the harsh realities of domestic and gender-based violence while fostering a culture of dialogue and support for survivors.
Produced by Take 7 Media and directed by Bem Pever, this compelling film, with a screenplay by Mahdi Eldaw and Emil Garuba, serves as a pivotal contribution to the annual 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. This global campaign aims to raise awareness and combat violence against women and girls.
The 16 Days of Activism is an international initiative observed annually from November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to December 10, Human Rights Day. It is a call to action for individuals, communities, and organizations worldwide to unite in advocating for the rights and safety of women and girls everywhere.
This film stressed the importance of the campaign and its message of zero tolerance for gender-based violence.
The campaign was launched by activists during the inauguration of the Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991. Since then, it has become a global organizing strategy embraced by individuals and organizations worldwide to advocate for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.
The Founder of Daurama Foundation, Dr. Samira Buhari, has shed light on the powerful themes explored in the foundation’s latest movie, describing it as a poignant tale of resilience, hope, and healing.
In a statement on Wednesday, Dr. Buhari explained that the film centers on the journey of a young girl who endures the harrowing cycle of domestic abuse in her home. Struggling to make sense of her pain, she discovers solace in writing, using storytelling as both an escape and a source of strength.
“The young girl’s narratives become a means to express her pain and resilience while imagining a world free from violence,” Buhari stated.
The movie also delves into the struggles of the girl’s mother, a survivor of abuse burdened by a childhood disability that limits her ability to defend herself physically. Through this dual perspective, the film highlights the generational impact of abuse and the courage it takes to break the cycle.
Buhari emphasized that the movie is not only a testament to survival but also a call to action for a society where women and children can live without fear.
The elease of Voices Within marks a significant milestone in the fight against gender-based violence, serving as both a call to awareness and a catalyst for action. In a statement, the organizers urged the public, stakeholders, and community members to attend the movie’s premiere, experience its powerful narrative, and unite in declaring, “No more” to violence against women and girls.
The film boasts a talented ensemble cast, featuring performances by Grace Daudu, Mbasity Jesse, Tolu Asanu, Franca Igwe, Lanzy Janpak, Hoomsuk Alex Jibrin, Austin Mangs, and Senenge Abela.
