The Department of Development Control, under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has issued 24-hour demolition notices to operators of illegal markets and shanties along the Karmo and Dei Dei Road corridor.

Over 500 structures have been marked for demolition in the upcoming exercise.

Mr. Garba Jibril, Sector Monitor and Assistant Director in the department, led the operation, emphasizing that the affected owners had previously received multiple notices regarding the illegal structures.

Jibril highlighted the necessity of demolishing these structures, citing their obstruction of the road and contribution to heavy traffic, particularly on market days.

Additionally, he pointed out the environmental hazards posed by their activities.

The FCTA has awarded a contract for the construction of the Life Camp – Dei-Dei Road, but the presence of traders along the road corridor has hindered progress.

Despite numerous efforts to encourage relocation to the designated Karmo Market, traders have been reluctant to move.

Jibril emphasized the seriousness of the 24-hour notice, warning that those who fail to comply will face consequences.

He reiterated the availability of the fully developed Karmo Market, equipped with necessary facilities, and the willingness of market operators to accommodate traders.

The FCTA aims to ensure a serene environment and promote the free flow of traffic by relocating traders from the road corridor to the main market following the demolition exercise.
