The Federal Government has called on Commonwealth nations to prioritize investment in quality education for all, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or socio-economic background.

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman made the call on Monday in Abuja at an occasion to commemorate the 2024 Commonwealth Day.

“Education stands at the heart of our collective aspirations for a better future.

“It is the foundation of empowerment, drives social mobility, promotes innovation and nurtures the leaders of tomorrow.

“Therefore, investing in quality education for all, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or socio-economic background, must remain a top priority for all Commonwealth nations.

“In the education sector, we must recommit ourselves to the ideals of the Commonwealth-unity in diversity, and shared prosperity.

“Together, we have the power to shape a future where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to our common wealth,’’ he said.

Mamman also called for the promotion of innovation in teaching methods and curriculum designs as well as prioritising teachers’ training and encouraging lifelong learning initiatives.

The Minister emphasised the need for a future of shared prosperity and opportunity for all Commonwealth citizens through prioritisation of transformative action in key areas such as education, healthcare, and economic empowerment.

NAN reports that the highlight of the event is the reading of King Charles’ message to the Commonwealth by George Nnalue, a student from the Federal Government Boys College, Apo, Abuja.

The message read in part: “We recognise today that our diversity is our greatest strength.

“The Commonwealth represents a third of humanity, from all regions of the world, with all the different experiences, knowledge, and aspirations that this brings.

“Wherever we live, we are united by the many challenges we face – climate change, the loss of nature, as well as the social and economic changes that new technologies are bringing.

“Our diversity means that these challenges affect us all differently and that we experience their impacts in different ways. Their seriousness, however, is common to each one of us’’.

NAN reports that the Commonwealth Dayis the annual celebration of the Commowealth of Nations and it holds on every second Monday in March.

The theme of the 2024 celebrations is, “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Commonwealth’ underlie all commonwealth activities for the year, reflecting the shared values, goals and priorities’’. (NAN)
