In a move to check ozone layer depletion, cocoa farmers have been trained on how to eradicate bush burning and deforestation.

Conceiving the initiative, Johnvents Group embarked on the training of the farmers to check use of chemicals that contributed to ozone layer depletion as it also provided seedlings to the farmers to protect the environment.

The Managing Director of the group of industries, Caroline Omotosho disclosed to newsmen in Akure, Ondo State capital, that in furtherance of checking ozone layer depletion, the organization was proposing transition from fossil fuels to gas.

She explained that the organization was planning to install new gas plants across its factories within the nation for greener future.

Having identified Carbon dioxide (CO2), Methane and Oxide as three major atmospheric disruption agents, Johnvents Group adopted dual approaches to deal with GHG.

Omotosho explained that promoting sustainable farming practices and transitioning to low-carbon energy with Innovative Gas plants are the dual approaches.

She explained that the installation of the new gas plants would phase out outright the Ozone depleting substances and safeguard the environment.

According to Omotosho, in efforts to checkmate detrimental actions that contribute to ozone layer depletion, Johnvents Group has implemented the Phase 1 of series of its initiatives as it has organized comprehensive training and awareness programmes in cocoa-producing regions in the country.

She said: “Numerous farming practices have been identified as contributors to ozone depletion and environmental degradation.

“Such practices include deforestation, the use of harmful pesticides and fertilizers, and indiscriminate bush burning

“The trainings focused on sustainable practices, providing cocoa nurseries to farmers, supplying exclusively approved pesticides and fertilizers to registered farmers and offering incentives to farmers who participate in and complete the Rainforest Alliance certification programme.

“Johnvents Group is set to transit from fossil fuels into gas plants. These cutting-edge gas plants serve as an eco-friendly and cleaner energy source, markedly diminishing GHG emissions associated with conventional fossil fuels.

“This transition aligns seamlessly with Johnvents Group’s unwavering commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of its operations.

“Through investments in sustainable practices and the adoption of low-carbon energy sources, Johnvents Group is taking decisive strides toward safeguarding the ozone layer and preserving our precious atmosphere.”
