The National Association of Seadogs,(Pyrate Confraternity) Oyo State Chapter in conjunction with African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) celebrated International Women’s Day by conducting a town hall meeting with market women at Aleshinloye Market.

The theme for this year’s celebration titled: For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equity and Empowerment.

Speaking at the event, the President of the National Association of Seadogs, Oyo State Chapter, Mr Adebowale Adeniji addressed the market women highlighting the importance of the day.

Adeniji emphasized that International Women’s Day was an opportunity to advocate for equal opportunities for women in all sectors of the community as well as an avenue to educate women and girls on their rights and promote gender equality.

He further noted that the celebration of the women in society on 8 March annually comes as a reminder that every woman is a gift to be treasured and empowered. According to the United Nations, this year’s theme “calls for action that can unlock equal rights, power and opportunities for all.”

“No woman or girl is to be left behind because she is female. “Central to this vision is empowering the next generation—youth, particularly young women and adolescent girls, as catalysts for lasting change.” Adeniji stated.

Also speaking at the event, Adebimpe Alex Ndukwe (Mrs), The State Coordinator AWLA, lectured women and girls on their role in the society and highlighted women’s rights under the law and Nigerian constitution which includes non discrimination. She advised the market women to speak to the right people about whatever they are going through at any point for possible intervention.

She went on to advise women to take pride in being women noting they are the pillars of the society. She also advised women to ensure they get involved in the economic development of the community.

As a closing remark, the president, Mr Adebowale Adeniji gave his phone contact to the market women leaders, urging them to contact the deck if any woman amongst them is in need of legal intervention.
