…Stakeholders Converge To Enhance Tax Compliance

By Chidi Ugwu

The Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) on Thursday declared that collective action among Nigeria’s revenue agencies is critical to achieving stronger tax compliance and driving national development.

Speaking at a pivotal 1-Day Stakeholders’ Engagement themed “Enhancing Tax Compliance Through Collaboration,” the Accountant-General began the session by offering heartfelt condolences to the President of Nigeria and the family of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, praying for peaceful repose and national unity during this period of mourning.

Addressing representatives from key agencies and stakeholders from across the country, the OAGF welcomed the transformation of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) into the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) under the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act 2025. This consolidation, the OAGF said, marks a new era of synergy aimed at “enhancing tax compliance through collaboration.”

The Accountant-General highlighted that: “Taxation is the lifeblood of the Nigerian economy and boosting compliance is essential not only for fiscal stability but as a pillar of national prosperity.

“Diversifying Nigeria’s revenue sources and decreasing reliance on volatile oil earnings are at the heart of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The OAGF stressed that inter-agency collaboration is indispensable to this mission.

“Ongoing efforts to digitalize tax collection processes, strengthen accountability, and ensure transparency are seen as key to increasing government revenue and achieving sustainable development.

The session underscored the government’s ambition to realize a $1 trillion economy by 2030. Addressing challenges in tax collection and broadening the tax net were presented as vital strategies to reach this goal.

The OAGF commended the FIRS for its persistent work in expanding the nation’s tax net and modernizing tax administration. Stakeholders were urged to share insights and forge actionable resolutions that will deliver measurable improvements in Nigeria’s tax system.

“Together, we can build a robust tax system that supports Nigeria’s economic growth and delivers on the promises of good governance,” the Accountant-General declared, opening the event and calling for fruitful deliberations.

The engagement concluded with a resounding commitment from all present to harness collaborative efforts for a more transparent, accountable, and effective tax compliance regime throughout the nation.
