Suspected thugs have attacked and burnt a section of St. Andrews Catholic Church, Amagu, Amaezekwe in Ezza South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The arsonists were said to have perpetrated the evil act at about 4:00 a.m Tuesday.

Speaking with our correspondent, a resident of the area who identified himself as Chief Christopher Ngwuta said the attackers attempted to kill the resident priest, Rev. Fr. Nonso Nwonu, but he was lucky to have escaped.

He alleged that the attack was carried out because the priest endorsed the governorship candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance in the state, Professor Benard Odoh.

According to him, the thugs struck around 4:00a.m before the morning mass, burnt and destroyed properties of the Church.

Mr Ngwuta said: “We are suspecting the evil party ( referring to the APC) as the brain behind the attack because the priest endorsed APGA candidate.

“Everybody in this community is afraid of mentioning their names because we don’t know their next plans.”

But the State Publicity Secretary of APC in the State, Hon Chidi Ogbuatu, denied the allegation, saying members of the APC in the State are law abiding people, who abhor violence, urging the general public to disregard the ranting of the opposition elements.

According to him, its laughable for anybody to associate members of APC with burning of worship centres, an action he said is sacrilegious.
