No fewer than 53 lecturers from polytechnics across the country are being trained on applied engineering research.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the three-day training, organised for the lecturers in Abuja on Tuesday, was part of efforts to strengthen Technical, Vocational Education and Technology (TVET).
The Executive Secretary of National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Dr Idris Bugaje, said that the workshop was geared toward building the capacity of lecturers to carry out innovations.
Bugaje urged the participants to take the programme seriously to enable them impart the training to their students.
Speaking at the occasion, the Lead Trainer, Dr Mfon Okpok, from Kennesaw State University, Georgia, U.S.A., said the lecturers were being equipped with hands-on knowledge on use of open source tools on the Linux platform.
“With the training, it means they can go online, download and learn. There are some open source tools like open CV that does robotic vision and robotic operative systems.
“What we are doing is to introduce the training to the polytechnic system so that the polytechnics can join the information super-highway of designing smart infrastructures,” he said.
NAN reports that Linux is a free and open source operating system for desktop and laptop computers designed to work ‘out of the box’ and which comes fully equipped with the applications. (NAN)
