NIMASA DG Drives Alignment with Global Decarbonization Goals As African Strategic Summit Kicks Off in Abuja

The African Strategic Summit on Shipping Decarbonization has commenced at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, with a focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the shipping industry.

Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director General/CEO of NIMASA, said the summit aims to align Africa’s maritime strategies with global decarbonization efforts, supporting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 13 on Climate Action.

The summit which brought together leaders to discuss solutions for a sustainable blue economy, as the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) advances its decarbonization policies.

Independent reports that key discussions include the IMO’s GHG reduction strategy, a just transition for Africa, and enhancing Africa’s technical capacity in climate action.

Also, Adegboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, while flagging off the summit emphasized the need for Africa to take a leading role in shaping the future of the maritime industry at the African Strategic Summit on Shipping Decarbonisation.

Oyetola highlighted Africa’s strategic position to become a global leader in green shipping, leveraging its geographic advantage and renewable energy potential.

He stressed the importance of equitable decarbonization, ensuring no African nation is left behind.

The Minister said the summit aims to solidify Africa’s position in advocating for fair revenue distribution from global decarbonization measures and to strengthen technical capacity for effective climate action, adding that

Nigeria is also bidding for a seat on the IMO Council, seeking support from member states for its candidacy.

The summit serves as a platform for forging stronger collaborations among African states and global partners to advocate for just and global partners to advocate for just and equitable implementation of IMO policies.

The event is attended by international experts, including the IMO-MEPC Chairperson Dr. Harry Conway, would foster collaboration and continental cohesion in addressing climate change challenges in the maritime sector.
