Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) has announced the immediate shutdown of two privately-run female hostels located in the Hotoro and UDB Road areas of Kano over what it described as serious safety and disciplinary issues.

The decision, revealed in a statement on Monday by the university’s Vice President of Campus Life, Dr. Hamza Garba, involves the withdrawal of official recognition previously granted to the Al-Ansar Indabo hostels.

The university stated that the measure is part of its broader commitment to maintaining a secure and morally responsible living environment for students.

“I am directed by the management to write, inform, and bring to the attention of our esteemed parents and students that the university has withdrawn its approval for Al-Ansar Indabo female students hostels located at UDB Road and Hotoro,” the statement read.

Dr. Garba explained that the facilities were found to be in violation of institutional policies governing student housing, with multiple breaches reported.

“These issues pose a serious threat to the well-being of our students,” he said, citing various infractions such as “immoral behaviour, poor water and electricity supply, student violence, unauthorised movement at night, and the sharing of facilities with unknown tenants.”

As a result, students currently residing in the affected hostels have been instructed to vacate the premises immediately after completing their semester examinations. The university also advised students to avoid returning to the hostels for their own safety.

“Management is working closely with relevant security agencies to ensure total compliance with the directive,” the statement added.

Parents and students were encouraged to reach out to the Office of the Vice President, Campus Life, via the official university email ([email protected]) for updated information on authorized and safe housing options.

The university emphasized that it will not be held liable for any incidents stemming from a failure to adhere to the directive.
