The League of Anambra Journalists in Abuja (LAJA) has held its first meeting of the year, with members urged to strengthen unity, professionalism, and commitment to the ideals of journalism and the promotion of Anambra State.
The meeting, held in Abuja, was chaired by the President of the association, Ikenna Okonkwo, with Princess Ekwi serving as secretary. In his remarks, Okonkwo called on members to take the activities of the organization more seriously in the new year by being punctual to meetings, building stronger relationships, and actively supporting the association’s programmes.

“We must take this organization seriously this year. Let us be punctual to meetings, strengthen our bond as colleagues, and work together to build a stronger League of Anambra Journalists in Abuja,” Okonkwo said.
He added that the association has outlined plans and programmes aimed at strengthening the organization and improving members’ professional and social engagement throughout the year.
The meeting attracted notable personalities who spoke on the importance of unity, professionalism, and the role of journalists in shaping narratives about Anambra State and the Igbo nation.
Former President of the Anambra State Towns People Association (ASTPA) and former President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo FCT Chapter, Chief Emeka Mbagha, commended the journalists for coming together under a common professional platform.
“It is very important and key that you are coming together as people of the same profession. Being in Abuja and of Anambra extraction means you represent the eyes, the ears, the nose, and the voice of Anambra people,” he said.
Mbagha emphasized that what journalists say or write about Anambra State can influence how the state and its people are perceived nationally.
“It is what you see and say that will reflect who we are. Some people may want to paint Anambra in a negative light, but you have the responsibility to present the truth,” he added.
He also reminded members of Anambra’s historic role in Nigeria’s development, particularly in journalism and the struggle for independence.
“Journalism played a key role in the independence of this country. The West African Pilot, owned by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, was used to challenge colonial rule and mobilize Nigerians toward independence,” Mbagha noted.
The former ASTPA president further urged members to remain connected to their roots by participating actively in their town unions and the Anambra State Towns People Association.
“I encourage every one of you to be part of your town unions and the Anambra State Towns People Association because community participation strengthens unity and development,” he said.
Also speaking, the APGA Youth Leader and the party’s Chairmanship Candidate for the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Dr. Eze Onyebuchi Chukwu, expressed appreciation to members of the League for their support and encouragement.
“The truth is that this League of Journalists stood by me strongly. I owe you a lot for the encouragement and support you have given,” he said.
Chukwu described Anambra people as historically forward-looking and industrious, noting that the state has consistently led in education, commerce, and professional development.
“Historically, Anambra people have always been in the lead. While many others were not prioritizing education, Anambra people were going to school, doing business, and striving for excellence,” he said.
He, however, expressed concern about growing divisions within the Igbo nation and called on journalists to use their platforms to promote unity and positive representation.
“Today we have a divided house. As journalists, you have the responsibility to present the Igbo people in a good light and promote unity among our people,” Chukwu stated.
He also urged journalists to broaden their engagement to include issues affecting the wider Igbo nation.
“You should extend your journalism beyond Anambra. Engage leaders across Igboland, ask questions about unity, and use your platforms to correct divisive narratives,” he said.
A former Secretary of the Anambra State Towns People Association, Sir Patrick Okwuba, also addressed the gathering, stressing the importance of unity, cooperation, and mutual support among Anambra people.
“This kind of gathering strengthens our social welfare and cooperation. When we come together like this, we create opportunities to support one another and move forward collectively,” Okwuba said.
Similarly, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Isaiah Benjamin, encouraged members of the League to remain united and supportive of one another.
“There is nothing you cannot achieve when you stay together. Unity among members will help this association grow stronger and achieve greater success,” Benjamin said.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for members to interact, review the activities of the past year, and discuss strategies for strengthening the organization.
Participants expressed optimism that the League would continue to grow as a platform for professional networking, mentorship, and the promotion of Anambra’s image within Nigeria’s media landscape.
The League of Anambra Journalists in Abuja (LAJA) brings together media professionals of Anambra extraction working in the Federal Capital Territory, with the aim of fostering professional excellence, unity, and the promotion of the state’s interests.
