The proposed hike in tariff toll fare which has been rescheduled to take effect from August 1st at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) seems not be going well with air users as they complain about its negative impact on them.
The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) had shifted the date to effect new tariff toll fare from July 17 to August 1.
According to a statement signed by FAAN management on Sunday the fare for cars will change from N200 to N300, while that of buses and Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) will change from N300 to N500 only.
It also said the truck (six tyres) tariff would change from N500 to N1,000 while the trailer and container tariff would be N2,000.
In separate interview with the our Correspondent on Thursday, some of the airport users complained that the current price of fuel at N617 which is higher in black market has remained a nightmare and that the proposed hike toll tariff will no doubt be additional burden they have to battle with.
Mr. Abdullah Shettima said FAAN management should have shelved the planned hike because of the increase in the pump price of fuel.
“Yes, I heard the news and I am not happy about it because all these increments do not add up at all. Is it that they don’t want us to enter the airport area? From N200 now, people like me that use cars are to pay N300. Let the government think of the citizenry before coming out with these policies,” he stated.
Another user Mr. Bolaji Adegboyega, stressed that the toll hike will put more pressure on Nigerians that are already struggling for survival.
“Those of us that voted for this government are already using our tongue to count our teeth, may God heal our land, and help us,” he stated.
For Joy Omokaro, a car owner, Nigerians are strong people and will surmount whatever challenge they are faced with.
“Indeed, we are in for a tough time. This is our country, whatever they are doing let them think about the average Nigerian. We are suffering but what I know is that no matter what, God will see us through,. Let us help ourselves in this country,” she said.
The statement had urged the public to take notice of the changes in the effective date and tariff.
“Commercial drivers are to use the drop-off zone to drop their passengers but not to engage in pick-up of passengers as the airport already has registered car hire services (FAAN TAXI, BOLT, UBER) situated along the airport exit way.
“There is an exclusive parking lot for heads of MDAs, MDs of private companies, and highly recognised individuals for their comfort as frequent fliers and their status in society.
“VIP parking stickers are also available for those who want to enjoy VIP parking privileges.”
Already, FAAN had commenced similar toll fare hike in Lagos since early July.
