The Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi has assured of transparent and effective utilization of the over N890 billion 2024 budget for quality roads construction across the six geo political zones of the country.

The Minister gave this assurance on Thursday, during his first meeting with Directors at the ministry’s headquarters, Mabushi, Abuja.

Umahi who also reiterated government commitment to workers welfare, however warned that any Director who is not performing optimally would not be allowed to slow down work at the ministry or scuttle the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on roads construction.

According to him, “If the ministry is given N892 billion to carry out its operations, no money would be left unutilized by December 2024. And this means more commitment, and it will be properly utilized, it will be transparent for everybody to see.

“And the end of transparency is in the quality of the roads, the length of the roads and how much it costs. The difference between us and other MDAs is that ours is what you can achieve in terms of roads, not speech.

“And our office is not the normal civil service office where you spend eight hours and close, at times you need to even work on weekends. Any one who puts in extra time would be appreciated.”

This is as he stated further that, there is need to review project agreements and costs.

In his words,, “When we give the right costing, the little resources we have will be able to go a long way towards meeting the expectation. We are to review what have been so disadvantageous to our road construction.”

Adding that 50 per cent of the funds allocated as road palliatives had been released by the federal government.
