Aleke Aleke in Abuja

With the recent appointment of CP Ikioye Orutugu, PhD, as the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, the industrious people of Anambra are beginning to witness a significant turning point in their quest and yearnings for enhanced security.

Since assuming office, CP Orutugu has embarked on a series of strategic initiatives aimed at building trust and ensuring public safety through intelligence-driven policing.

Notably, he has prioritized an extensive tour of both near and remote police formations, engaging with officers to assess the operational readiness of his command and to provide quick instructions on effective modern policing techniques and processes to meet evolving challenges in a contemporary environment.

In a strategic effort to address potential conflicts at their root, he has reinitiated and re-energized the Anambra State Cattle Menace Committee, which aims to establish a tight statewide safety net to eradicate sources of fear, concerns, disharmony, lack of balanced interactions, and foster harmonious relationships among farmers, herders, travellers, urban and local residents.

CP Orutugu’s deliberate strategy of strengthening community policing, intelligence-driven operations, and strategic partnerships with key stakeholders have already started yielding certain visible rapid results, restoring confidence and trust among Anambra’s vibrant business community, traditional rulers and representatives from various critical sectors.
According to a statement from the Command’s articulate Public Relations Officer, SP Osita Ikenga, a dedicated intelligence unit has recently been established.

This unit is charged with the prime responsibility for timely gathering, analysis, distribution of actionable intelligence and monitoring, to support proactive policing. This move is designed to enhance the command’s response time to emerging threats, solidify crime prevention efforts, and facilitate the precise apprehension of criminals – leaving virtually room for excuses.

Shortly after taking office, CP Orutugu initiated community outreach programs to engage and interface with local residents, actively listen to their concerns, and address their fears. To further enhance these efforts by meaningfully anchoring all the feedback, he simultaneously launched a comprehensive review of the command’s operational protocols to streamline response mechanisms and improve operational efficiency.

This review importantly included a redesigned complaint management system aimed at ensuring that justice is served at all times to all manner of men, regardless of their station.

As CP Ikioye Orutugu settles into his vital new role, it is clear that his commitment to restoring order and transparency within the enforcement agency, enhancing public safety, and making Anambra a model for effective policing is being refreshingly redefined and given the long-needed Filip. With a clear blueprint in place, there is little doubt that these initiatives will yield significant dividends in both the short and long run.

Under his leadership, the Anambra State Police Command has recorded notable successes, including the dismantling of the notorious criminal camp in Nimo, Njikoka Local Government Area, as well as the containment of the lingering disruptive activities by IPOB elements and the widespread apprehension of kidnappers and suspects involved in ritual crimes, in their numbers.

Indeed, for the previously beleaguered Ndi Anambra, this marks a breath of fresh air—a new era of intelligence-driven, modern, and effective policing characterized by professionalism, accountability, and responsiveness.

All hands should now be on deck to ensure sustainability for the greater good.
