FERMA Blamed For Creating Death Traps On Roads In Katsina

FERMA Blamed For Creating Death Traps On Roads In Katsina

The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), has been condemned for turning the Kano-Katsina-Jibia international route linking Maradi in Niger Republic into a death trap.

The agency responsible for the maintenance of the trunk ‘A’ road has been engaged in digging deep holes with the intention of repairs along the route and leaving them without asphalting it for safety purposes.

Several motorists plying the road have been involved in fatal accidents which has caused death and injury to many road users due to the negligence on the part of the agency.

Innocent motorists, especially in the night fall victim of the death traps created by the agency as there are no sign posts indicating that these potholes exists.

An official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers NURTW, who spoke to newsmen on the condition of anonymity said several complaints lodge to the agency by the union on the condition of the roads have fallen on deaf ears of the authority concern.

According to the official, the union had advised the agency against digging deep holes for several kilometers without embarking on the necessary repairs to avert these unnecessary lost of lives on the road.

The official lamented that, the abandoning of the deep holes on the major highway has caused huge losses to their members whose vehicles fall into the potholes left behind by the agency.

Efforts by the our Correspondent to speak with the officials of the agency in Katsina on why the abandoning of these potholes proved abortive.
