The Flickers of Hope Foundation (FOH), an NGO, has held the third edition of the Pa Alfred Shonubi Annual Quiz Competition and Annual Teachers’ Award Programme to promote learning and celebrate excellence in education.

The Executive Director of the foundation, Mrs Omolara Adedeji, speaking at the event in Abuja on Saturday, said the initiative was designed to promote knowledge, critical thinking, and creative expression among students.

She added that it also aims to honour the vital role of teachers in society.

The programme, held in partnership with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), marks the maiden edition of the teachers’ award component.

“This initiative is rooted in a legacy of wisdom, discipline, and relentless pursuit of excellence. Pa Shonubi reminds us that education is not just about what we learn, but about who we become,” she said.

Adedeji said the foundation believes every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, and that teachers must be celebrated and supported for their tireless contributions to nation-building.

She highlighted the importance of the event and called it a strategic investment in the future of Nigerian youth, especially during a time when educational gaps continue to widen.

“Today is not just a competition; it is a movement for educational excellence. Platforms like these are more than events, they are investments in the minds and hearts of tomorrow,” she added.

She called on stakeholders to remain committed to promoting quality education and ensuring teachers receive due recognition for their impact.

NAN reports that the event featured a quiz competition, debate, and spoken word performances by students from eight participating schools, including JSS Dutse Alhaji 1 and 2, JSS Bwari 1 and Central, JSS Tudun Fulani, JSS Peyi, His Excellency School, and Ajike Model Schools.

After a rigorous contest, JSS Dutse Alhaji 2 emerged winner of the quiz competition, while JSS Peyi and Ajike Model Schools took second and third positions respectively.

In the spoken word category, Nana Yakubu from JSS Dutse Alhaji 2 came first, followed by Elizabeth Jonathan from the FOH Teens Leadership Club and Funmilayo Ali from JSS Tudun Fulani.

The teachers’ awards were presented to three outstanding educators following a thorough assessment process, which included nominations by school management and votes by students.

Award recipients were Mr Samson Bala and Mrs Roseline Amos from JSS Peyi, and Mr Yusuf Ibrahim from JSS Bwari 1.

A full scholarship for the 2025/2026 academic session was also awarded to Esther Ejike of JSS Dutse Alhaji 2, the best-performing student from the winning school in the quiz competition. (NAN)
