A media advocacy organisation, Glide Media Foundation, has called for calm and urged respect for press freedom following reports of alleged remarks attributed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, concerning television journalist Seun Okinbaloye.

In a statement issued by its management, the group expressed concern over what it described as “widely circulated reports” suggesting that the minister made comments perceived as threatening toward the journalist.

The organisation noted that while the full context of the remarks remains subject to public clarification, such reports have generated anxiety within media circles.

The Foundation emphasised the importance of responsible public communication, particularly by individuals in positions of authority, noting that statements capable of being interpreted as hostile toward journalists could have broader implications for press freedom and public trust.

“Journalists play a vital role in informing the public and strengthening democratic governance,” the statement said, adding that media professionals should be able to carry out their duties without fear or intimidation.

The group called for clarification from relevant parties to address the concerns raised by the reports, and urged all stakeholders to prioritise dialogue and mutual respect. It also appealed to authorities and media organisations to continue promoting a safe and enabling environment for journalism in Nigeria.

Glide Media Foundation further stressed that safeguarding press freedom remains essential to the country’s democratic development, urging restraint in public discourse and adherence to the rule of law.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the office of the minister regarding the allegations.
