The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed a derailment involving a Kaduna-bound passenger train at approximately 11:09 a.m. on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at KM 49 between Kubwa and Asham stations along the Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor.
According to the NSIB, six individuals sustained injuries, with no fatalities reported.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at NSIB, the bureau announced the deployment of a go-team to the accident site to collect evidence, engage stakeholders, and commence a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the derailment.
The investigation aims to identify both the direct and underlying causes of the incident to issue safety recommendations and prevent future occurrences.
Captain Alex Badeh Jr., Director General of NSIB, expressed sympathy for those affected, stating,
“We deeply sympathise with all who sustained injuries. The Bureau has deployed investigators to the site to ensure the root cause of this derailment is uncovered. Our commitment is to ensure safer rail transport for Nigerians through a transparent and independent investigation.”
The NSIB, Nigeria’s multimodal transport safety agency, is tasked with conducting objective and comprehensive investigations into transport accidents and incidents across the country.
The bureau’s mission is to promote transport safety by identifying probable causes and advocating for improvements based on its findings.
The derailment has raised fresh concerns about the safety of Nigeria’s railway system, particularly along the busy Abuja-Kaduna corridor, which has experienced similar incidents in recent years.
The NSIB has assured the public that updates will be provided as the investigation progresses, with a focus on enhancing rail safety for all Nigerians.
The bureau extended its support to all passengers affected by the incident and reiterated its commitment to ensuring a transparent investigation process. Further details on the condition of the injured passengers and the progress of the investigation are expected in the coming days.
