The Non-Governmental Association of Literacy Support Services (NOGALSS) says it is commencing its pilot digital programmes among youths and out-of-school children in Karu community.

The National Team Lead of the programme, Dr Cecilia Pwoi, made this known during an advocacy visit to the traditional ruler kf Karu, Joseph Danfulani Narai on Tuesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the project is titled:”Empowering Children and Youth with Digital Competencies through Inter-Generational Learning in a Fast Developing Digital World for Sustainable Livelihood in Communities”.

Pwol said that the choice of Karu for
the project was informed by its large population of out-of-school children.

“We are in a digital age where we use the computer for virtually everything.

“We do all sorts of artworks, even advertise goods and many more, using the technology that we now call digital technology.

” Karu is just a pilot, and because we know that there is a big population of out-of-school people here,” she said.

According to him, Nigeria has a large population of young people in need of these competencies that have not been reached.

“And so this is a starting point. We hope that we reach many more communities and impact on many more young people,” she said.

She said that the organisation, with support from German Corporation, would be empowering 90 youths and out-of-school children within six months in six centres of the community.

She expressed hope that after the training, the students who would have gained some competencies, would be able to cascade their learning experiences to others in the community.

Responding, the traditional ruler commended the gesture of the organisation, adding that their goals would have positive impact on the Karu community.

“We will make sure we mobilise people to attend to this occasion.

“We will give them the infrastructure they are asking for because we have people fighting for poverty, fighting for education and to make sure our out-of-school children are engaged,” he said.

The project which would also run in Taraba, Kano, Imo, Akwa-Ibom, and Oyo states will address the digital deficiency of drop out children, displaced children and unschooled children.

It is also to benefit children and young women in Purdah, girls and young women with VVF, as well as orphans and vulnerable children.(NAN)
