It was a spectacular display of entertaining activities for the over 100 girls drawn from the Junior Secondary School and Government Secondary School, Festival Road, Garki Abuja respectively as The Adekunle Child Foundation (TACF) engaged them in celebration of The 2023 edition of the International Day Of The Girl Child.
The International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated annually on October 11 to raise awareness about the challenges faced by girls around the world and to promote their empowerment.
This year’s theme was “Invest In Girls’ Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being, focused on the importance of girls inclusivity in advancing the society.
The Adekunle Child Foundation (TACF) mark the occasion in Government Secondary School, Festival Road, Garki in collaboration with African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) and another NGO, Sisters, Wives and Mothers (SWiM).
Speaking, the President/Founder of TACF Mr. Femi Adekunle, stated that the girl-child has not fared too well in Nigeria.
Apart from harmful cultural practices that make her especially vulnerable, for example, female genital mutilation, early marriage etc, the legal regime is still weak as the Child Rights Act which was passed to protect the child is yet to be domesticated in many States in Nigeria especially in the northern states.
One of the guest speakers Mr. Chiedu Aliogo, a lawyer, spoke to the girls about the human rights of the teenage girl, while Mrs Carol Ojukwu of AWLA challenged them to emulate notable Nigerian woman who have made their marks in different disciplines around the world.
TACF treated to refreshments, the over 100 girls drawn from the Junior Secondary School and Government Secondary School, Festival Road, Garki Abuja respectively.
