In a decisive move aimed at restoring the International Conference Centre (ICC) to its former glory, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate cancellation of all events scheduled at the facility for the next eight months.
This decision follows a thorough inspection conducted by the Minister, who expressed dismay over the dilapidated state of the ICC.
Wike’s visit to the facility revealed the extent of neglect it had suffered under the previous management, prompting him to take swift action.
It would be recalled that he revoked the contract of the former contractors, Integrated Facility Management Services Limited, and entrusted the renovation project to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, the original builders of the ICC.
Addressing the media, Wike emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “We cannot continue to be embarrassed in this way.”
He stressed the need for immediate rehabilitation to bring the ICC up to international standards. Consequently, all bookings for events at the ICC have been cancelled to facilitate the renovation process.
“We have called the original contractor, Julius Berger, to come back for the renovation,” Wike announced, highlighting the importance of expediency in restoring the facility’s prestige.
He projected a timeline of seven to eight months for the completion of the renovations, underscoring his commitment to delivering a revamped ICC that meets global standards.
While refraining from initiating probes into the previous management’s handling of the ICC, Wike issued a stern warning to the new Managing Director of the Abuja Investment Company Limited (AICL), the entity tasked with overseeing the ICC.
He emphasized the need for accountability and efficiency, asserting that failure to meet expectations would result in consequences.
“I’m not here to probe anybody,” Wike clarified, “but I expect the Managing Director to fulfill her duties effectively.”
He affirmed his confidence in the MD’s capabilities while emphasizing the imperative of delivering a world-class ICC for the nation.
The Minister’s decisive actions signal a commitment to revitalizing the ICC and reaffirming its status as a premier venue for international events in the nation’s capital.
