WTD: FG pledges improved welfare for teachers, says collaboration key to quality education

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing the welfare of teachers and promoting collaboration as a core strategy to strengthen Nigeria’s education sector.

The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, made the pledge during a news conference and symposium to herald the commemoration of the 2025 World Teachers Day.

Recall that the World Teachers Day is usually commemorated annually on Oct. 5.

The day is to promote the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers (1966) and the UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher Education Teaching Personnel (1997).

The 2025 celebration has the theme: Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession”.

Alausa described teachers as “the greatest assets of the nation,” noting that they remain the custodians of knowledge, builders of character, and architects of national development.

He admitted that teachers had not been adequately rewarded for their contributions but assured them that the Federal Government was working to improve their welfare.

Speaking on the theme of the celebration, Alausa stressed that collaboration among teachers was crucial to achieving quality education in a fast-changing, knowledge-driven world.

“For too long, teaching has often been practiced in isolation, with each teacher confined to their classrooms, bearing the weight of the responsibility alone.

“Yet, we all know that the challenges of rapid technological change, the need for innovative pedagogy, equity gap, and demands for a knowledge-driven economy cannot be addressed by individual efforts alone.

“Collaboration among teachers transforms the profession from a solitary task into a dynamic community of practice.

“It allows teachers to share knowledge, experiences, and innovative strategies, mentor and support one another, particularly younger or less experienced colleagues, and jointly solve problems around curriculum delivery,” he said.

He explained that when teachers work together to share experiences, mentor one another, and innovate collectively, students become the ultimate beneficiaries through richer and more engaging instruction.

The minister disclosed that the Federal Ministry of Education was creating structures in schools to encourage peer learning, mentorship, and digital platforms that connect teachers across states and regions.

He also commended the leadership of the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), as well as other education stakeholders, for their efforts in professionalising teaching and ensuring higher standards in the sector.

“Good teachers equal excellent students, and excellent students become productive citizens who can compete globally.

” Nigerian students are excelling everywhere in the world because of the solid foundation laid by our teachers,” Alausa said.

He called on teachers’ unions, school leaders, parents, communities, development partners, and the private sector to join hands in strengthening the profession through collaboration.
