By Linus Aleke, Abuja

The first Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Sen Jibrin Barau, has called for synergy, amongst member states, multilateral institutions and other critical stakeholders in all sectors of the economy to uproot poverty in West Africa.

Speaking with journalists, at the ongoing first ordinary session of ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja, Sen Barau said the only problem Africa has is impoverishment as they are impoverished by a certain forces, internal and external.

He noted that though, every continent is going through its own trajectory, Africa, should strive to utilise all that is available to it to get out of poverty as it has all the mineral resources needed for development.

According to him, West Africa has no reason to be poor because it has all the endowments but unfortunately, countries that have half of what Africa has are now wealthy countries but not the region.

The Deputy President of the Senate, reminded Africa that nobody will make the continent better but its citizens and as such, they should strive to use God given resources to create enabling environment in agriculture, education, health and all sectors so that they can live comfortably.

He noted that this can be done individually and collectively.
