The House of Representatives is in deep mourning following the sudden demise of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, the Deputy Chief Whip, who passed away earlier today after a brief illness. She was 59 years old.

Representing the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, Onanuga was a dedicated public servant, a trailblazer in legislative leadership, and a voice of hope for her constituents. Fondly known as “Ijaya,” she was admired for her intellect, compassion, and unwavering commitment to public service.

Born on December 2, 1965, Rt. Hon. Onanuga began her journey in the National Assembly in 2019 under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC). As Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development during the 9th Assembly, she was instrumental in advocating for women’s empowerment and advancing social welfare programs that directly impacted the lives of millions.

Her re-election in 2023 saw her ascend to the position of Deputy Chief Whip in the 10th Assembly, a role in which she displayed remarkable leadership, discipline, and a tireless work ethic. Her contributions to legislative deliberations, particularly her commitment to fostering unity and bipartisanship, earned her widespread respect among her colleagues.

Colleagues and constituents alike celebrate her legacy of service, recalling her ability to inspire with her eloquence and her tireless drive to create lasting change. As a lawmaker, she championed causes that touched the heart of ordinary Nigerians, from grassroots development to policies aimed at building a more equitable society.

In a statement, signed and issued by the House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr., expressed the collective grief of the National Assembly. “Rep. Onanuga was a pillar of strength, a beacon of hope, and an embodiment of excellence. Her intellect, humility, and unyielding passion for a better Nigeria will remain a guiding light for those who knew her.

Her passing is an irreparable loss to her family, her constituency, Ogun State, and the nation at large,” he said.

The House extends its heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, political associates, and the people of Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North. As the country mourns this irredeemable loss, the life and legacy of Rt. Hon. Onanuga remain a testament to what selfless public service can achieve.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by her family in due course.

May her soul rest in perfect peace.
