The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Grace Ike, has called for stronger unity among Ndi Igbo, urging members of the community to support one another and create greater opportunities for women to assume leadership positions.

Grace Ike made the call while receiving members of the League of Anambra Journalists in Abuja (LAJA) during a courtesy visit to the NUJ FCT Council Secretariat in Abuja.

She expressed appreciation for the association’s visit and solidarity, describing it as a reassuring demonstration of the importance of standing together as a people.

Reflecting on her emergence as Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, she noted that while she had received tremendous encouragement from colleagues across the country, particularly from northern Nigeria, she had expected stronger support from within her own ethnic community.

According to her, the visit by LAJA reinforces the need for Ndi Igbo to move beyond cultural affiliations and actively support one another during significant moments, irrespective of personal or political differences.

The NUJ FCT Chairman also urged journalists to remain committed to ethical, balanced and accurate reporting, stressing that the media has a vital role in promoting national unity, accountability and sustainable development.

She further encouraged the Igbo community to identify, mentor and support competent women for leadership positions, emphasizing that women have continued to demonstrate exceptional capacity to provide effective and transformational leadership.

Grace Ike expressed optimism that closer collaboration between the NUJ FCT Council and the League of Anambra Journalists in Abuja would strengthen professional relationships, promote positive narratives about the Igbo people and inspire greater solidarity within the journalism profession.

Earlier, members of the League of Anambra Journalists in Abuja said the visit was to formally introduce the association to the NUJ FCT Chairman and reaffirm their commitment to supporting her leadership.

They explained that the association was established to foster unity among journalists of Anambra extraction, encourage mutual support during critical moments and promote the welfare and professional development of its members.

The delegation expressed confidence that a stronger and more united platform would help counter divisive narratives, deepen collaboration among journalists and contribute positively to the growth of the media industry.

The association also extended an invitation to Grace Ike to participate in its future programmes as both organizations work together to advance professionalism, unity and solidarity within the Nigerian media landscape.
