FRSC Boss Condoles With Victims Families
A heavy container on Daff/Leyland Truck fell off the truck and crashed on a Mitsubishi L300 bus, crushing five female passengers to death.
According to Margaret B Onabe, acting Sector Public Education Officer who issued a statement on the tragedy on behalf of the Sector Commander, Adeoye Irelewuyi, the two unidentified drivers of the Mitsubishi L300 Commercial bus with registration number: XE245AWK and a commercial Daf/Leyland truck with number: T-19094LA involved in a fatal road traffic crashed at Odumodu junction by Nteje Awka Expressway on Friday at about 07:30hrs.
The two vehicles were moving on different directions before the crash which was attributed to failed portion of the road.
According to eyewitnesses: the two vehicles were enroute to different locations; one to Awka and the other to Onitsha, when they got to the spot at same time and due to the weight of the truck, the container fell on the bus and crashed.
Ten people comprising three male adults, and seven female adults were involved in the crash.
Unfortunately, five of the female adults were killed while two male adults and two female adults sustained varying degrees of injuries while one male adult was rescued unhurt.
The Federal Road Safety rescue team from RS5.33 Nteje took the injured victims to Divine Care Hospital, Umunya for medical attention, while the dead victims were taken to Chira Hospital for doctors confirmation before deposition at New Jerusalem Mortuary, Nteje.
Meanwhile, the Sector Commander in collaboration with the Unit Commander at Nteje made efforts and removed the obstruction caused by the crash
The Sector Commander, Mr. Irelewuyi sympathized with the family of the dead victims and prays for the repose of their souls, while also wishing injured victims quick recovery.
He Urged motorists to drive with caution, and be observant of their environment when driving, as the motto is: ‘Drive to Arrive Alive’.
The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, Dauda Ali Biu condoled with the families of victims and called on fleet and other commercial vehicle operators, as well as private vehicle owners to exercise caution and be conscious of their environments whenever they drive and also to avoid driving against stipulated speed limit on all roads.
A statement signed by Bisi Kazeem, the Assistant Corps Marshal, Corps Public Education Officer, noted that the move is to eradicate all incidences of road mishap arising from impatience and lack of mental alertness when on wheels.
This advice came following the fatal crash that occurred involving a Mitsubishi L300 commercial Bus with vehicle registration number XE 245 AWK and a DAF Leyland Truck with registration number T-19094 LA at the aforementioned route which involved 10 people, killed 5 Female Adults, injured 2 Male Adults and 2 female adults.
According to the first information report from the scene of the crash, eyewitnesses stated that the DAF Leyland truck was coming from Onitsha while the Mitsubishi L300 bus was coming from Nteje axis and both vehicles got to the failed portion at the same time when the container of the Leyland Truck fell on the Mitsubishi Bus.
The Corps Marshal seized the opportunity to commend FRSC operatives whose prompt response to the distressing situation led to immediate evacuation of the victims of the crash to Divine Care Hospital Umunya and Chira Hospital for medical attention, and clearance of obstruction to ensure free flow of traffic within the axis.
