The renowned Nigerian human rights lawyer and lead counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has called on the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to use its 66th Annual General Conference to restore the declining moral standards in the legal profession.
According to him, the new administration should bring fresh energy, courageous reforms, people-oriented initiatives, and a renewed commitment to restoring the Bar to the commanding moral and professional heights expected of the foremost association of lawyers in Nigeria.
He made the appeal in his Monday Musings titled, “66TH ANNUAL GENERAL CONFERENCE OF THE NIGERIAN BAR ASSOCIATION: BEYOND LIMITS — BUT BEYOND WHAT?”
He said that as Port Harcourt, the Garden City, has once again become the gathering place of Nigeria’s legal fraternity, the 66th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), holding from August 21 to 28, 2026, under the evocative theme, “Beyond Limits ’26,” is underway.

He said the city has understandably taken on the atmosphere of a national legal carnival, with heightened security arrangements and the unmistakable presence of lawyers from across the country.
The statement reads in part:
“This year’s Conference is particularly significant. Beyond the usual intellectual feasting, professional networking and the inevitable reunion of old friends—and, perhaps, the occasional reunion of lawyers who have been avoiding one another in court corridors—it marks an important change of guard in the leadership of the NBA.
“The Conference will witness the formal assumption of office of Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, as the 33rd President of the Nigerian Bar Association. Her emergence is historic: she is the first woman to be directly elected President of the NBA and only the second woman to occupy the office since the Association’s establishment in 1933. She secured 12,317 votes in the July 2026 election to emerge as the winner.
“That history comes with a formidable responsibility. We therefore hope that the new administration will bring fresh energy, courageous reforms, people-oriented initiatives and a renewed commitment to restoring the Bar to the commanding moral and professional heights expected of the foremost association of lawyers in Nigeria.
“It is equally appropriate to acknowledge the outgoing President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, whose administration has, by all reasonable assessment, recorded significant achievements and contributed meaningfully to the development of the Association. Posterity, we hope, will be fair in its assessment of his stewardship.
“But as the Bar gathers under the banner ‘Beyond Limits,’ perhaps the most important question is: what exactly are we determined to go beyond?
“Beyond outdated practices? Beyond complacency? Beyond professional indiscipline? Beyond internal divisions? Beyond the troubling conduct of a few members whose actions sometimes make the public wonder whether the wig and gown are still symbols of learning, dignity and justice, or merely fashionable accessories?
“These are uncomfortable questions, but the Annual General Conference provides precisely the right platform to ask them.
“As the Conference progresses, our routine Musings will therefore examine some of the critical issues confronting the Nigerian Bar, not merely to celebrate its accomplishments, but also to interrogate its shortcomings, particularly those conduct and ethical failures capable of diminishing the hard-earned reputation of this noble profession.
“The Bar cannot successfully demand accountability from society while appearing reluctant to hold itself accountable. A profession that stands as society’s legal conscience must first ensure that its own conscience remains beyond reproach.
“The real meaning of ‘Beyond Limits,’ therefore, must extend beyond the conference halls, elaborate ceremonies, intellectual fireworks and the inevitable photographs of lawyers in their finest regalia. It must translate into a renewed Bar—more ethical, more courageous, more united, more accessible, more professionally disciplined and more responsive to the people whose rights it exists to defend.
“Port Harcourt has opened its arms. The Bar has assembled.
“Now, let the conversations begin, and let us see whether we can truly go beyond our limits, rather than merely rename them.”
