The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has been impeached for alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office, Timesreporters Online has learnt.

The impeachment was confirmed on Saturday following a plenary session.

The impeachment marks the end of Obasa’s tenure, which had been mired in controversies over allegations of financial impropriety and governance malpractice.

His removal follows a series of investigations and debates among lawmakers, culminating in a decisive vote of no confidence.

Hon. Mojisola Miranda Emerges as New Speaker

Following the development, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, representing Apapa I Constituency, was elected the new Speaker of the House. Miranda, a seasoned legislator and vocal advocate for transparency in governance, becomes the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly in recent history.

The impeachment process began after Obasa was accused of gross misconduct, including alleged mismanagement of Assembly funds and abuse of office.

Specific charges included: Alleged misappropriation of funds allocated for legislative activities. Undue interference in the awarding of Assembly contracts. Authoritarian leadership style that reportedly alienated colleagues.

Following the submission of a report by the Assembly’s Ethics and Privileges Committee, a vote was held, with the majority of lawmakers endorsing his removal.

The development has elicited mixed reactions across the state. Civil society organizations and political analysts have commended the Assembly for holding its leadership accountable, while Obasa’s supporters argue that due process was not followed.

Obasa’s impeachment is expected to have far-reaching implications for Lagos politics, particularly within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). His ouster could shift the balance of power in the Assembly and raise questions about party unity as the state gears up for future elections.

Meanwhile, Hon. Miranda, in her acceptance speech, vowed to restore trust and transparency in the Assembly’s operations. “I am committed to steering this honorable House towards greater accountability and serving the people of Lagos State with integrity,” she stated.

With Obasa’s impeachment finalized, political observers will be watching closely to see if legal challenges emerge or if further allegations surface against other key players in the Assembly.

The Lagos State House of Assembly is set to resume deliberations under its new leadership next week, with the spotlight firmly on Hon. Miranda’s approach to governance and reform.
