A member of Abia House of Assembly, Mr Solomon Akpulonu, has said the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) would take over the seat of power in the state come 2027.
Akpulonu, who is representing Obingwa East State Constituency, made this known to newsmen while celebrating Christmas for his constituents at Umuogele Ntighauzo Autonomous Community in Obingwa Local Government Area.
He said that PDP has decided to give a very strong opposition to the present government, by putting in place various experts that would continue to trace and critique its activities.
According to him, everybody is disgusted with this Labour Party (LP) government and we are only waiting for a little time to come up.
“I believe that by next year, we will tell people that we have matched this government with the last one and it has not done well,” Akpulonu said.
He said that though PDP is in the majority, it decided to concede the leadership of the 8th Assembly to LP because the governor is the financier of the House.
The House is constituted by 12 persons in PDP, 11 in LP and one in All Progressives Party.
But the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and Majority Leader are all members of LP, which is also the ruling party in the state.
Akpulonu, the immediate past Majority Leader during the PDP government, had led other PDP lawmakers in staging walkouts during sittings to protest this.
The situation had led to his suspension from the House for some weeks by the Speaker, Emmanuel Emeruwa.
Akpulonu said: “If you go with this opposition, you may not even get your salary.
“So the best thing for us to do was to hold on; we will look like people who have been coerced.
“We decided to give this government a little time to see if they can change.
“We are going into the trenches early next year to do a very strong critique about things that are not done well because everything is wrong with this LP-led government.”
Akpulonu, who has been in the House for 12 years, described this democracy as a faulty one.
“In Enugu State, LP is the majority, but the party compromised and gave PDP the leadership of the House because the governor determines everything,” he said.
He said that PDP has decided to give a very strong opposition to the present government, by putting in place various experts that would continue to trace and critique its activities.
Akpulonu, who is the most experienced member in the House, boosted that PDP would take over the seat of power in the state come 2027.
The lawmaker said that the Christmas celebration for his constituents was an annual ritual, to appreciate them for all their supports.
He said that he decided to assemble the party faithful and its leaders, give them some palliatives “because so many people feel the PDP is dead in some of the areas in our place.”
The palliatives include many bags of rice, bundles of wax print and other food items.
A constituent, Mr Justice Ogbomna expressed gratitude to the lawmaker for the gesture, while describing him as an exemplary leader who has compassion for his people.(NAN)
