Renowned constitutional lawyer Amobi Nzelu, Principal Partner at Chinenye Chambers, has expressed disappointment over the Nigerian Senate’s refusal to honour Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, the former chairman of the National Electoral Commission.

Addressing journalists in his office over the weekend, Nzelu believes that individuals who claim to know history should be cautious not to distort facts or remain silent when they should speak out.

Nzelu specifically criticized Senator Adams Oshiomhole’s comments, which he sees as an expression of hatred towards the Igbo people.

He argues that honouring Nwosu, whether in life or death, won’t alter the historical significance of the 1993 election.

Nzelu suggests Oshiomhole’s views are misguided and fail to consider the context of the incident under a military government not intending to hand over power at the time.

According to the constitutional lawyer, Late Prof. Nwosu was the hero of the election, but his employers or paymasters weren’t willing to hand over power, leading to the election’s annulment.

He emphasizes that Nwosu conducted the freest and fairest election in Nigeria’s history, a fact acknowledged by former Head of State Babangida in a 2002 interview.

He welcomes President Bola Tinubu’s correction of the impression during Nwosu’s burial, providing a fitting tribute to his legacy. As a constitutional lawyer, Nzelu has spoken out on various issues affecting Nigeria’s judiciary and democracy.

Amobi Nzelu Esq is a renowned constitutional lawyer and Principal Partner at Chinenye Chambers.

He has spoken out on various issues affecting Nigeria’s judiciary and democracy, advocating for a sanitized judiciary and calling on judges to be accountable.
