The All Progressives Congress, APC in Rivers State has threatened Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State to honourably resign or be impeached by the state assembly.

Chairman of the Rivers APC, Chief Tony Okocha issued the threat during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday.

Chief Okocha while reacting to the recent political developments in Rivers emphasised the Supreme Court Judgment explicitly highlighted several impeachable offences against the Governor.

He said, “Supreme Court judgement is sacrosanct as it is. There is nothing anybody can do, you can’t add or remove.

“As a political party, we are advising the governor that there are two options available to him, resign honorably or be impeached, that’s the position of the APC today.”

Okocha,. commenting on the invitation extended by the Governor to the lawmakers said the timing for the invitation was belated and not within the ambits of the law, hence should be rejected.

“If I were an assembly member, my answer to that Greek gift from the governor is that it is not within the ambit of the law, secondly, it’s already belated.

“He has ran the state aground. He has disrespected Mr President and we warned him, let him resign because there is no government in Rivers State. He’s already sitting on a keg of gunpowder and a little spark it will explode,” he said

Chief Okocha however applauded the 27 lawmakers led by Martin Amaewhule for standing firm in their pursuit for justice, reprimanding those threatening to destroy oil facilities in the region should impeachment proceedings be launched against Governor Fubara, describing the threat as cowardice.

“I congratulate the 27 assembly members who stood their grounds. Not even the threat, not even the palpable hunger following their non-payment of salaries, they were not deterred so we need to commend them as the face of modern democracy in Nigeria,” the party chairman said.

Recall that the Supreme Court recently recognised the Martin Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly as the rightful assembly of the state.

The judgment also voided the presentation of the 2025 budget before a three-man assembly led by Victor Oko-Jumbo and also removed all elected local government chairmen.

The Assembly following the Apex Court decision invited the Governor to represent the budget before it while also summoning the Chairman and Commissioners of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission ( RSIEC) to also appear before it.

However, the Governor in an attempt to resolve the impasse, invited the lawmakers to meeting at the government house on Monday (today) by 10am.
