Unlawful Naira Printing: EFCC Arraigns Emefiele

.… Trial Begins May 28

Again, the embattled former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr Godwin Emefiele, was on Wednesday arraigned on a 4-count charge by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission before Justice Maryanne Anenih of High Court of the Federal Capital Territory.

Emefiele was docked over allegation that he unlawfully printed naira notes.

In the charge marked CR/264/2024, the former CBN Governor was accused of knowingly contravening th provisions of Section 19 of the CBN Act 2007, by approving the printing of N375.520million pieces of colour-swapped N1,000 notes at the total cost of N11.052billion without the recommendation of the Board of the CBN and the strict approval of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

However, the sacked CBN governor was granted bail after taking plea to the tune of N300million by the court.

Recall that Emefiele is also being prosecuted by the EFCC before Justice Hamza Muazu of FCT High Court on an alleged 20-count amended charge.

He was alleged to have used his then office as CBN governor to engage in criminal breach of trust, forgery, conspiracy to obtain by false pretence and obtaining money by false pretence.

Meanwhile, Justice Anenih has fixed May 28 and 29, for commencement of trial of Emefiele.
