Mallam Isah Oniru, the new Director General of National Orientation Agency (NOA) on Monday declared that his regime will prioritize development of Nigeria’s Code of Conduct to reform the citizenry’ s principles, values, standards.
Mallam Oniru, made the disclosure at a brief ceremony organized for official handover of the mantle of leadership of the NOA from the outgoing DG, stating that the code of conduct would serve as rules of behaviours that guide the decisions of Nigerians as it is done in countries like United States of America, South Korea and other nations of the world.
Oniru reiterated that Nigeria cannot achieve prosperity, stability, unity, and make progress if there is no basis to love the country, urging that management and staffs of NOA that ‘it is our responsibility to establish that basis’.
” Nigeria needs code of conduct. We need to be conscious of the fact that we need a code of conduct and we must understand exactly who we are supposed to be as Nigerians if we go to North Korea.
“Every country defines its citizenship in North Korea. As a citizen, you are brought up to see the President as god.
“In America, you are brought up to see yourself as superior to the others and you are brought up to consider your country as the best in the world”.
“our job will not just be mobilizing Nigeria’s convincing them, persuading them to love the country.
“Our job was to include the leaders for them to do things that will make people naturally feel connected, emotionally connected to the country. It flows naturally; you cannot enforce patriotism.
“You have to nurture it from our respective communities.
“Let me reiterate the fact that the President is aware that Nigeria cannot achieve prosperity, achieve stability, achieve unity, and make progress if there is no basis to love the country, and it’s our responsibility to establish that basis” he said.
Earlier, the outgoing DG, Dr. Garba Abari, noted that he had enjoyed the cooperation of the management and staff for seven and half years he worked at the agency and enjoined the them to extend the same cooperation to the incoming Director General.
