The Anambra State Town’s People Association (ASTPA) in Abuja the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has praised the Senate for recommending the immortalization of its illustrious son, the late Rt. Hon. Agunwa Anaekwe, former Speaker of Nigeria’s Federal House of Representatives. Anaekwe passed away on July 6, 2025, at the age of 69.

Addressing journalists in his office in the FCT, the President General of ASTPA, Chief Arinze Anadu (Nwachinemelu), described Anaekwe’s leadership style as exemplary and selfless, worthy of emulation by today’s leaders. According to Sir Anadu, Anaekwe’s principled leadership and courageous stance against anti-democratic forces are qualities that can strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.

The Senate’s decision to immortalize Anaekwe was made during a plenary session on Thursday, where lawmakers paid tribute to his legacy and contributions to Nigerian governance, as a result of a motion moved to that effect by Senator Victor Umeh of his Anambra Central Senatorial District, co sponsored by Senators Orji Uzor Kalu, Mohammed Monguno and others. Senators noted that Anaekwe offered principled and courageous leadership during his tenure as a Speaker, resisting anti-democratic forces seeking to undermine the independence of the legislature.

The ASTPA extended condolences to Anaekwe’s family, community, and the people of Anambra State, Igbo nation, and Nigeria. They described Anaekwe as a mentor to many leaders, a recipient of national honors, and an exemplary son of Anambra State and Nigeria.

The Senate has urged the Federal Government to name a national institution or public edifice after Anaekwe, in recognition of his outstanding service to the nation and his role in strengthening democratic governance. This move aims to permanently honor his legacy and service to the nation.
