Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB), is considering an out-of-court settlement in his alleged treasonable felony trial at the Federal High Court Abuja.
At a resumed trial on Wednesday, Kanu urged the trial judge, Binta Nyako to on her q own, invoke Section 17 of the Federal High Court Act, which provides for “reconciliation” and facilitation of amicable settlement in criminal or civil matters.
Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor had claimed before the court that sometimes ago, he discussed the proposition with counsel to the Federal Government, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN.
Ejimakor said Awomolo responded that the proper time for such an issue has not come.
Reacting, the FG prosecutor informed the court that he does not have the instruction of his client to embark on any negations with the defendant over the charge.
“I told him to go to the Attorney General of the Federation, who has the power.
“If he is interested in negotiating, he should go there, his office is just here”, Awomolo said.
Justice Nyako, stated that the court has no problem if the parties want to negotiate.
She therefore, urged Kanu to approach the AGF, who is the proper person to negotiate with.
