The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Nigeria has kicked off the new year with a strategic partners’ briefing engagement, outlining its priorities for 2025.
The virtual meeting, which took place on February 13, brought together 106 partner organizations from across the country.
UNIC Director Ronald Kayanja presided over the engagement, highlighting the significance of 2025 as the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and the 10th year of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Kayanja also emphasized the importance of the Pact for the Future, which commits Member States and the UN system to mobilize around actions for youth and future generations.
A statement by National Information Officer, UN Information Centre (UNIC), Oluseyi Soremekun, said this year, UNIC will focus on peace and security, human rights, and information integrity.
“We will work with partners to address challenges to the integrity of the information ecosystem,” Kayanja explained. He also stressed the need to address the dangers caused by misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech, especially in the wake of AI.
Participants at the briefing praised UNIC for bringing together various NGOs to discuss the UN’s priorities for the year.
They also called for more collaborations and strategic alliances between NGOs, as well as increased use of technology to ensure inclusive participation.
A similar engagement, Soremekun said is planned with journalists in both print and electronic media, as well as those operating online channels.
With its 2025 priorities and the Pact for the Future, UNIC is poised to make a significant impact in Nigeria and beyond.
